Mum

The last 6 months of mums life were a trial and she was courageous in dealing with all the complications and set backs trying to throw off the cancer. All in the hope of being restored to full health and carrying on with life as normal. 5 months in, this optimistic fight came to an abrupt end when her oncologist explained the cancer had escaped treatment and spread, moreover was aggressive. Mum was offered further treatment on the understanding it was unlikely to cure but made the brave choice to let things be. Her words were "This is no life" and didn't want to take the route our father had by suffering the side effects of more treatment to no gain and lose the chance to have the peace and love with her family that she finally come round to. As you can imagine this news and decision took a heavy toll on her initially, but the nurses from Princess Alice Hospice were there to guide her on her choices and the way forward and talk through her fears and what was to come. This was a revelation and not without its effect on someone who found it difficult to talk about "the end" the nurses were there to guide us as well on any small aspect that might have otherwise been ignored. We are proud to live in a society that has the humanity to provide this service and extraordinarily it is funded by donations. Mum, without doubt was comforted by this outlet for her fears and as her illness drew on we as a family became fearless, stronger and peaceful as a result. As it happened Tara and I were determined to care for mum at home until the end and we weren't sure how we'd get through it but we all knew the Princess Alice Hospice was an option if needed. Being at home is the right thing to do but not all people have that choice and Princess Alice Hospice needs our support. Please give something in memory of mum for this unbelievable and very beautiful organisation that is the legacy of this wonderful country we live in and the best of its inhabitants. thank you so much Sharon, Tara and Daran Bowles
